“When one door closes, another opens…”
Have you ever sat down and wondered, why certain things happen to us? Why we are allowed success? Why we are allowed failure? Why happiness? Why sadness? Why anything? Throughout life, we run into so many of these ‘whys’ and how we react to them is the most important piece of it all.
You see we have two paths to choose from when something happens to us. We can either, sit and focus on it and make it our priority and every thought, or we can move on. Regardless if it’s a good thing or bad thing that happens, these are the choices we must choose from. Now, are either of these easy choices? No, if they were humans wouldn’t be humans, closed doors wouldn’t exist, and life would be jolly! But here’s the thing, once we can identify why ONE is better than the other, we can see life from a different light.
We are all familiar with "when one door closes, another opens", the thing that everyone says in that certain circumstance! The funny thing is not too many are familiar with the other half of it, in my opinion, the second half is what should be heard rather than the first half.
“…but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
You see, there is something about us, something in our nature that likes to dwell on things. We like to marinate ourselves in that closed door. Think of a kabob that has chicken marinating for hours to make the taste even better, that’s us in that closed door. The thing is there won’t be any good taste in this situation!
Why do we dwell? Why do we focus on this closed door?
I want to first acknowledge, that if you focus on this closed door, congrats you are like the 99% of us out there! You are human and welcome to the boat! Acknowledgment is the first step to growth and a heading in the right direction!
We focus on the closed door for a few reasons:
1. Curious if we can find out what is still behind the closed door, what IF we could have had a different outcome.
2. Have a hard time acknowledging failure or disappointment
3. Scared to accept the truth and reality of what has happened
4. Petrified that the next step we take could lead to yet another closed door
5. It’s the easiest option of them all
The reasons for why one focuses on the closed doors is simple, COMFORT. They don’t challenge us or take us out of our comfort zone. There is not one good thing about them, and sadly they prohibit any sense of growth or rewards.
We are all familiar with the picture of these men digging in a tunnel. They have been digging for days! They are trying to find their fortune of “diamonds”, and every day they fail to reach it. Every day they don’t reach it is a ‘closed door’, but there is a difference between the two. The man on the bottom, started strong but is then absorbed by the 5 reasons, and finally, they conquer him, and he leaves. He leaves thinking that life is rigged, and he can never win…
Then we have the man on the top, while he knows ‘closed doors’ exist will not let them conquer him. He perseveres, looks toward the future and never looks back. He shuts the closed door and pushes the next one open even harder… he then reaches his ‘treasure chest’ in life, he finds his happiness.
The key to this picture, the key to life, is not to look back, but to look forward. Do not focus on the closed doors, the past things that brought you down. Think of the things that bring you up, and that will make you who you truly are meant to be in life.
Do not look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that you fail to see the one which has opened for you, my friends.
Open new doors. Nail closed ones shut. Look forward. Look up.
