I hope you all had an amazing Christmas and I hope the calories were kept low and now we are all rushing to the gym to burn it all off, or are we just “low key” eating all the leftovers……
Whether you are doing the former or the latter it doesn’t matter I guess, or does it?! Grab a beer or some Christmas cheer, sit down relax, put on your slacks and read away….
First impressions: Probably one of the biggest game changers in our lives. Psychologists call it “thin slicing.” Within seconds of meeting you, people decide all sorts of things about you, from status to intelligence to promiscuity. Is that scary or what?!
When we think about all the things we have spoken about in the past blogs we have talked about this whole build up of ourselves, and the means to doing so we come to the end of: WHY? Well for many reasons. We do it for our own personal morale, we do it to better ourselves, we do it to reach that ultimate goal of any human life: PERFECTION. Putting all these together we run into one huge topic and situation which is FIRST IMPRESSIONS.
I want you to close your eyes for a moment, and think of a time or all the times that you first met someone and how your first impression came off to them. Was it good? Bad? Ugly? Awkward? (let me tell you I know all about awkward!!!!) But for real how were these experiences? I will tell you from my own personal experiences, that I have made horrible first impressions especially in my years of 16-21. I dressed poorly, I acted stuck up, I didn’t act the way I should. Now this may seem like something of not great importance to you, but ladies and gents, the FIRST IMPRESSION is a deciding factor for your future in the other persons eyes. Whether it is an interview or meeting your significant others family or simply just you walking down the street. Like I always say people are always observing us and we must act like we are being recorded at all times. I will say it isn’t easy but it is something we must strive for.
Ok well how do we do it though? There are a couple things we can do to help ourselves with this goal. Dress nicely, this is something which is crucial. In the workplace they say “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.”It may seem superficial, but clothing makes a statement about who you are and where you want to go in your life, and who could get mad or upset with looking at someone who is dressed to impress….. NOBODY!
Secondly, stand up straight and proud have great posture, these are all things people observe in us. Unfortunately, people are looking for flaws in a first encounter they want to see why you are not the right person, or what you do that isn’t right because sometimes it can be only easy to see some good. Your words you speak, if someone came over to speak with you, in order to convey the right first impression you would need to convey a sense of courteousness and attentiveness. Through conversations people have the ability to say so much through both their actions and their words.
You see there are so many things that can give off a bad first impression, whether we are that person or not as well. That why it is so important to make sure we are always striving for perfection in every way possible. It may sound strange but I even when I am going to the grocery store try to look my best, and especially when going to work. You never know who you will meet or who you will bump into. Alway be on guard and be striving for perfection, you never know when you might have a “first encounter” with someone. Let’s make sure we are always ready for it and on our feet.
OK, I dragged on long enough. Go back to your Netflix and your junk food and enjoy your day:)
Remember the New Year is days away….. ARE WE PREPARED?!
