Put your whiskey down, drop your bag of pretzels, and for goodness sake SMILE it’s blogging time. I hope you all had a blessed and fun New Year, and enjoyed it all, both the big and the little…..
It really is the little things in life that make us happy, according to “Time Magazine.”
The survey of 2,000 adults reveals that finding money you didn’t know you had is the ultimate mood booster, followed by sunshine, getting something for free and getting into bed with fresh sheets, or putting new socks on (which IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST HAHA).
Super sweet treats also featured huge on the list, with chocolate, cookies, cake all among the top 20 things that make people most happy. Crazy how some of these things were on the top, but it will go to show later why they were.
Of those surveyed, 62% have a sweet tooth and four out of 10 adults said a sweet treat lifts their mood – while nearly a third of adults confessed to getting irritable if they’re hungry or peckish. In our culture now as we know it they call it “HANGRY”, when a person is so hungry they become mad or irritated with even the most minute things. Weird I know just breathe though:)
It may surprise some to learn we are a nation of as I say “optimists”, we all want the best and hope to expect the best. Always trying to see the best of the situation, and never hoping or assuming anything bad. More than half of those surveyed say they have a “glass half full” outlook on life and 56% describe themselves as particularly happy. In my mind I would say this is the way we should all live our life. Reason being is I believe if we do that we set ourselves up for more success than failure.
So saying this, how do we see the greatness in little things? How do we keep this happy and smiley mindset?
According to the research, undoubtedly pleasant surprises provide us with the greatest moments of happiness with a huge percentage saying the best things in life are those you don’t expect.
Dr Glenn Williams, teacher in Psychology at Nottingham Trent University, said: “It’s vital for our health and well-being to experience positive emotions on a regular basis. As this research shows, a successful route to happiness is not necessarily through experiencing major events that we might have planned out such as getting married, getting a new BMW, getting that huge promotion, or even being a millionaire.
See it isn’t the big things only in life, rather it is the small, and often unexpected, pleasures in life that can make us smile each and every day to help us build happier and more meaningful lives for ourselves and for others. For me and my personal life, I just think about what makes me happy, and I can think of so many things. I just recently purchased a dog with my roommates, now this may seem so boring and lame, but to me this made my whole day. Its such a small thing but it is so effective for me on many levels. It can sometimes be as little as smiling at someone while walking past them, or saying they look gorgeous, it’s the little things that can make a difference in someones life.
I think we get so stuck in the big picture that we lose sight of the baby steps that are required in order to attain the BIG picture. We need all to appreciate the little things and realize without the little, we will never find the big picture. It is once we start to realize that the little things are so crucial that we start to grow into this person we want to attain. The little things in life make us see life in such a better perspective, and it makes life more tolerable and meaningful.
At the end of the day, the decision is in our hands and only we can choose the mindset we attack the world with. Do we go in appreciative or do we go in negative and pessimistic. The former is always the way to go, and will never fail us.
So let us all see the little things, and let us all try to motivate each other by them. Remembering that life is not just about those huge moments, but it is indeed about all the small, summed up into one big. It is the small things that build into a beautiful and splendid narrative that we can latch onto forever. Take this and go do something for someone whether it be big or small, and you will not regret it.
I hope you all have a great night and a happy new year! Remember there are 365 days in the year, take it a minute at a time and add each day to make a GREAT YEAR. Alright, I am done so you can go back to whatever you were doing…..
Remember, it is the small things, ALWAYS and FOREVER that make a huge difference.
